Theme of the book:
Develops fluency in reading, comprehension for beginners and some aspects which need reinforcement and integration into the literature.
Purpose of the book:
To offer children the necessary tools to develop a fluency and precision in their reading to acquire more complex concepts like Imot Hakria (א ה ו י Patach Gnuva (when the last letter of the word is a ח ע or ה with Patach),the Chatafim, entc.). and to develop with them the initial capacity of comprehension.
Caracteristics:
Bemaalot bet teaches how to learn the vowels gradually and systematic in a clear fashion which will lead the child to a precise reading from the very beginning.
It is recommended to use this book with its workbook together as it has practical exercises for use of the vowels, putting emphasis on phonology and different ways as how to achieve a fluid and correct reading.
It includes very clear instructions for teachers and parents to obtain maximum benefits from the material.
Content:
- It should be very clear that the vowels can’t be taught till the children know all the letters and their sounds perfectly. Included in the beginning of the book are exercises to reinforce and memorize the letters and their sounds (p. 19-48)
- The teaching of the vowels is done in a gradual fashion:
- The teaching of the vowels contains several steps (the following is a disclosure of the book pages with the letter alef, same instructions are repeated with all the other letters):
- Recognizing the symbol of the shown vowels (p. 51).
- Learning the sound of the shown vowels (p. 52-53).
- Reading of the open syllables of the shown vowels (p. 54-57).
- Reading the closed syllables of the shown vowels (p. 58-59).
- Reading of words which stress the shown vowels (p. 60).
- Reading without sound of the shown vowels (this step is essential for the child to read the syllables correctly and doesn’t guess the word with his first impression) (p. 61).
- To practice how to read the shown vowels in combination with the vowels taught before ( Kametz not being included ).
- Reading of complete words with stressing the taught vowels ( Kametz not being included )
- Reading of words which don’t make sense ( Kametz not being included ).
- Reading of the taught vowels (62-63).
- Reading short stories to practice the taught vowels ( Kametz not being included ).
- To teach the vowels, a vast number of exercises have been included in a way where the material gets acquired by the children in an orderly and structured form.
- To resume, there is a section of “the family of the vowels” to emphasize the ones who have a similar sound (p. 187-192).
- After teaching the vowels, worksheets are included to enrich their learning (p. 193-207).
- At the end of the book there are short stories followed by simple comprehension activities (p. 208-224).

It has 150 pages with practical exercises to stress the vowels in the following way: identifying the vowels, developing the phonological awareness, reading syllables, exercises in which the corresponding vowels have to be put according to what the child hears, identifying similar words (with the purpose to train the eye to capture the details of the word on a global scale), etc.
