Bemaalot Alef facilitates the learning of the Alef Beit through a gradual and systematic process, by memorizing and practicing the letters.

This method allows the student to grasp and understand complex reading concepts leading up to correct and fluid reading. It’s a methodical and gradual method to ensure the recognition of the letters, combining new letters with old ones showing their differences and letters used at the end of a word etc. Special emphasis is being put on the sounds of the letters, phonology, identifying letters inside a word and alternatives for fine motor skill development.

It includes very clear instructions for teachers and parents to gain the maximum benefit from the material.

Content:

The way of teaching the letters is being shown through the method “ Tomchei Zikaron” which makes internalizing and memorizing the above mentioned process easy. The memory supports are familiar to the child so the child can associate easy the letters with their writing.

The letters are divided into six groups according to the six memory supports which appear in the first pages of the book (p. 17-19)

There is a preliminary   preparation for writing, which is to loosen up the hand (p. 20-29)

The acquiring of the letters is done in a clear and detailed fashion. During this process the child learns how to write the letters, their proportions and placing the letters on the right lines.

In order to give the child a feeling of security and enjoyment, each new letter is acquired in a gradual fashion, with the following steps (following will be shown a breakdown on the page numbers of the letter alef and continuing the same steps are being shown for the rest of the letters):

  • Step A – letters are written in big, with dots and arrows showing the way the letter needs to be traced correctly (p.31)
  • Step B – the letters are marked in a discontinuous line and the child must trace them with a pencil (p. 32)
  • Step C – practicing the letters in squares with the points and arrows diminishing (p.33).
  • Step D – writing the letter on a line where we expect the child do be able to do it without any printed help (p. 34)
  • Step E – writing of complete words with the above learned letters (p. 34).
  • Step F – the writing of complete sentences, with the letters being in perfect proportion and leaving the correct space between them (this step
  • does not exist with the first letters)
  • At the end of the book there are specially designed pages to copy whole paragraphs (p. 184-191).

This book is called a notebook and a book at the same time with the intention to make the work easier for the children and their teachers as they have book and notebook all in one.
