Caracteristics:
Bemaalot Hakria Dalet reinforces the grammatical rules which have been acquirered in the previous volumes.
It includes stories and divisions of syllables as well as effective tools on how to read complex words.
Content:
Repeating and deepening of basic themes:
- Repeating letters: even at this stage we have experienced children who confuse letters and their names. For this reason, it is important to review and consolidate them. Included is the review of the Alef Bet in order and their names, which permits orientation in the Chumash, sounds of words are being identified (phonological consciousness) and exercises to distinguish the letters in preparation for intermediate reading (p.12-14)
- Knowledge of the Chumash: after reviewing the order of the letters, it is the right time to show the children the way the Chumash is constructed and the order of the Psukim.(p.35-43).
- Review of the vowels: experience has shown that children even at this point can confuse the vowels and their sounds and it is of primary importance to deepen and secure that knowledge so they can acquire future grammatical rules and concepts.
TOOLS TO DEVELOP FLUENCY AND PRESISION IN READING
- Mishkalim (reading-letters (vowels) consonants in the word): Many children have difficulties reading fluently because they read each syllable on its own. By familiarizing themselves with the simple Mishkalim of the language, the children learn how to capture and identify the word pattern immediately while they are reading without needing to take the word apart (p.56-62).
- Phonological consciousness: phonological consciousness helps recognizing the sounds of the letters in a word. If the teacher thinks the following pages are unnecessary for the level of his pupils, he can omit them (63-72).
ESTABLISHING AND STRENGENING COMPLEX TOPICS
- Dagesh: recognizing where to put emphasis on the word in use (74-76).
- Shva: to distinguish betuin Shva Na and Shva Nach is essential to achieve a fluent and precise reading, especially for reading prayers and other kodesh material. At this point one studies the simplest 3 rules of Shva Na:
-Shva in the beginning of a word
-Two consecutive Shvas in the middle of a word
-Shva in a letter with a point (77-97).
- Various themes for reading: this chapter deepens and reinforces more complex reading: Kamatz Katan, the Chatafim (), the Mapik – a dot in the letter ה at the end of a word, Patach Gnuva (when the last letter of the word is either ח ע or ה with Patach). (p.98-130)
THE DIVISION BY SYLLABLES
- Dividing syllables: This is essential for acquiring fluency and precision in reading and it is an incomparable tool to read complex words. At the beginning of the chapter, we learn how to divide simple words and only later syllables are being used which have Shva Na (with the two types studied) (132-156).
COMPLEX WORDS
- Complex words inside a text: Precisely after acquiring fluency in reading a lot of children start to read without stopping at the components of a word. Thus, it is important to show them how to identify complex words in a text and to develop a technique how to read with precision (158-168).
- Reading stories with complex words: Here reading material is presented for a higher level containing difficult words. The purpose is to include difficult words into every story, to divide them into their syllables and to read the stories fluently and precisely (169-178).
